CHAPTER SEVEN

I couldn’t believe what I had just heard. That sounded very much like a threat!

“Jax Kirby is mine!” Meg bellowed.

Wow. She sounded like a complete maniac. I almost expected her to start cackling like some cartoon villain.

“Meg…Portia,” a deep voice interrupted, “what’s going on here?”

Jax was standing in the doorway of my office, a confused expression splayed across his handsome face.

“Portia, do you have a minute?” he asked, his face eager but questioning.

“Oh, hello, Jax,” Meg looked towards the powerful shifter standing in the doorway. She flashed him a bright smile. “How are you?”

Jax nodded. “Good. Meg…would you mind giving me some time alone with Portia?”

A sour look crossed her face. “Ok. I was just leaving anyway.”

“Just wait a minute, Meg,” I insisted, getting up from my desk. I walked over to where the two stood.

“Really, I need to be going,” she replied. Then she murmured, “Don’t you dare say anything.”

Hell no. After her tirade about how she and Jax were a ‘thing’ and then threatening me, no less, she wasn’t just sashaying her ass out of here. We were going to settle this, right here, right now.

“Just wait one minute, Meg,” I lifted a finger in the air. “So Jax,” I said slowly, “as you know, I have done my share of matchmaking with the ‘Curvy Girls’ site.”

“Right…” Jax agreed. I could see from his expression he was wondering what I was leading up to.

“Well, Meg here seems to think that you and she…”

“What?” Jax asked, looking completely bewildered.

I could see from his face, he had no clue where I was going with this. I glanced over at Meg. Her eyes were shooting daggers at me.

“…she thinks you and she could be a…”

I didn’t have a chance to finish my sentence before Meg jumped in and touched Jax’s shoulder.

“Portia is a successful matchmaker. She’s trying to say she thinks that the two of us would be a great fit. Right, Portia?”

She glanced at me and nodded, encouraging me to agree with her. She hadn’t wanted her feelings outed, but since I was going to anyway, it seemed she had decided to run with it.

“You? Meg? With me…” He gaped at her open-mouthed in what looked like horror, then glanced over at me, a surprised look on his face.

I rolled my eyes, shaking my head. “Actually, no, Meg. I did not say you and Jax would be a good fit. You said that the two of you would be a good match, and you suggested I tell Jax that I had matched you together.”

“Meg…” Jax said softly, now understanding what was happening, “…I think you’re a wonderful woman, and a fantastic researcher. But I’ve marked Portia as my mate. She’s the one for me. My intended.”

“Haha…you’re such a joker, Jax,” Meg laughed, reaching over to touch his arm. He gently brushed her off.

“Portia’s the only woman for me, Meg,” he said softly. “I’m sure there is someone out there for you too.”

Meg’s eyes flared, suddenly livid. “All this time
